In Bible study the other day, we studied a verse I believe
to be generally misunderstood. It is
Matthew 6:33 from the Sermon on the Mount.
The verse goes like this, “But seek ye first the kingdom of G^d, and all
these things will be added unto you.”
Now, which part of that verse do you think gets the most
attention? As a prophet, I am going to
say, the last phrase, “all these things added unto you.”
Wow, Phil, you sure are cynical!
Yes, true, but recall I am blessed/cursed with a prophetic
calling. Check it out. A prophet’s main job is calling the church
to accountability; not one of your more positive and pleasant callings.
In a materialistic culture and age, “all these things” has
great attraction. Advertising works,
which is why 30 s on the Super Bowl costs so much. But, no one is advertising for G^d.
“But…” is a conjunction of contrast. Go back to Matt 6:24 to get the context. “No man can serve two masters; either he will
hate the one and love the other…you cannot serve G^d and mammon. So the key word here must be “first” rather
than “things”.
Materialism rules.
L^rd deliver us by Your great strength!
