Borrowing vs Giving

I borrow stuff and loan stuff from time to time.  I loan out money, vehicles, tools, a strong back, and other stuff. I borrow tools, and occasionally a 4-wheeler.  It's a loan, not a gift.

It is common in our USA culture to borrow with the clear understanding that we will return the borrowed items in good condition, and to loan with the expectation that what we loan will be returned in good shape. After all, it's a loan, not a gift.

Some things, we don't loan.  We don't loan underwear or toothbrushes.  We don't, or rather shouldn't, loan identities or spouses.  It's neither a loan, nor a gift.

One more class of things that we would never think of loaning are items that are single-use.  We might give someone a toothpick, but we certainly don't want it back.   It's giveable not loanable.

Except for one time in history.

Once this rich guy loaned a tomb to someone.  I am sure that Joe of Arimathea was planning to give, not loan, Jesus that tomb; but, Joe didn't realize that Jesus just needed a short loan.

So, after only 3 days, Joseph had his tomb back, good as new.

Now there is a story that a smart person wouldn't fabricate.  It is true, and I'm betting my life on it.
