Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day has special significance for me.  My dear brother David, only 18 months younger than me, got married on this day.   David and I were very close growing up.  Brother David is one of the uncles, for whom my son, David, is named.  David and his wife Doris are the very definition of "salt of the earth".  They are first of all, great Christians, but also career educators and exemplary citizens in every way.  The complement each other, so here's a salute to you and to many more years of happy marriage.

Bill Murray also did a terrific film named after this day.  In the movie, Murray keeps repeating Groundhog Day.  The film makes a pretty good philosophical statement, but I'll keep it to myself for now.  It might be worthwhile to watch it today.

Groundhog Day has additional significance.  First no one takes it too seriously, and that's as it should be.  In the old days, a prediction of the seasonal change was pretty handy for farmers, though I doubt that many took it very seriously even then.   By the same token, the world is full of people making "predictions" based on little more than seeing their shadow.

A lot of predictions fail.  But is it noteworthy that thinks are different with G^d.   When HE predicts, then we can count on it.

G^d made numerous detailed predictions regarding the birth of The Christ.  All were fulfilled. G^d details the outcome of battles and all sorts of events.

Most importantly, for those that KNOW Him, he has foreordained that we should live with Him in all eternity.  Now that's a prediction that will change our lives, if we take it more seriously than Groundhog Day!
