Carrying the Torch—in a Torch-carrying Mob

Tonight was the Ostersund Earth-day celebration.  We were told that over 150 countries and 2/3 of the Swedish communities would celebrate Earth Day.

A public official gave a little speech that had something to do with Faith, Hope and Love, and how we were somehow making for a brighter future.  I didn’t quite follow, linguistically, or philosophically.

We then lit torches, and young and old, but mostly young and very young, carried the lit torches about 2.5 blocks to a mound of snow that had been piled up for our use.  (Brenda and I had wondered what the snow was for, now we know).  We stuck the torches in the snow, and supposedly the local power company donated 10 kr for every torch to some ecological organization.

It was fun, mostly because of the free saft (a hot lemony-cider-tea drink) and bullars (delicious pastry).
But I couldn’t get my mind off that Faith, Hope and Love.  You really can’t argue against Faith, Hope or Love, but I also can’t get my mind off the false hope of  Faith, hope or love arising from sticking a flaming torch in the snow, or eating bullars.

The only entity worthy of Faith is…
The only true source of Hope is…
The only basis for genuine Love is…
G^d alone.  But you already knew that.
