Life without a Car

We have not driven an automobile, and only occasionally been in one, since we left the USA.
And, there’s something to be said for it.
  • No gasoline to buy
  • No parking worries
  • No traffic jams
  • No maintenance
  • No shoveling out the car or the drive.
  • You get a bit fitter, from all the walking
  • You don't have to  plug your motor in to warm it up (as seen in 1st photo below).
  •

                                                            (Sheltered Petrol station).

Of course, there are some disadvantages:
  • You have to eat more, because you burn more calories walking.
  • It takes about 10-12 min longer to get to work or church.
  • You have to bring your groceries home in smaller amounts in a backpack (but we walk right by a grocery every day).

Maybe the nicest thing about walking is that it SLOWS ME DOWN.  Even walking fast, is slower than driving.  In driving you have to be on the alert.  In walking, except for cars and cyclists (they ride on sidewalks here, not street), and the occasional slick spot, you can be a bit more friendly, a bit more pensive, a bit more in tune with the weather, and with the folks around us.

Maybe I’ll walk to work occasionally in Tuscaloosa.  After all, Jesus walked, even on water!
