Opening of the ice

Nope, I don’t mean the ice opened, I mean they opened the ice.  At these temperatures, it'll be a loooong time until the ice melts.  Friday morning, on the walk to work, I noticed that they had marked two paths on the ice across the lake between Froson and Ostersund.

Today, Saturday, we accidentally stumbled on the opening celebration.  According to a local guy who was in charge of setting up everything, people from The Netherlands and Germany, and other “ice skating loving countries” make the trip to Froson-Ostersund in order to enjoy the 10 km (6 mile) ice skating path).  Our new friend said that in the coming week they would open another 8 kilometers of path on the ice.

We not only saw skaters, but horse-drawn sleigh, skiers, and even a dog sled team.

Who knew that skating was such a big deal?  We’re glad it is, it was a great celebration.

  1. That's really cool, but I'm confused. People can ice skate and ski and have dog sleds on the same surface?

    1. We saw it this very day with out own eyes. It is a BIG expanse of snow-covered ice!!! They scrape off the snow to make the path. It is marked with poles.

    2. Oh yeah, it's cross-country skiing. To ski downhill you have to go to the ski run just south of our house, or over to Are where there are LOTS of downhill runs.
