The Simpsons

Am surprised that there are USA (oovesO) tv shows here.  More surprised at what is here.  Reruns of “Two and a Half Men”, "Fear factor", L.A. Ink" “How I met your mother”, The Simpsons.  Go Figure.

You've never seen The Simpsons, until you've seen it with Swedish sub-titles!  And, we only get 4 channels.

Our friend Torgny Smedby, M.D. tells us that BEFORE students were trained in the Queen's (British) English, and spoke that way.  Now, even if they are trained to speak UK English, the prevelance of USA t.v. means that everybody speaks with a N. American accent.

A few nights back, we saw the Swedish national competition to determine who represents the country in the European Performance competition.  Our friend tells us that is a BIG deal here, discussed in tabloids and such.  I guess “American idol” shows haven’t over-done it yet here.
The advertisements are obviously in Swedish (Svenska), so we can only guess at how they are promoting their products.  Some of them look pretty clever.
Not speaking Swedish gives us a WHOLE new appreciation for folks in USA who don’t know English.  As hostile as some folks are towards Latinos, I’ve always been in favor of bilingual signage and such.
Now, more than ever.
