Snow part 1

It is not just cold here, there’s plenty of snow.  Ostersund is the winter sports “capitol” of Sweden.  Ostersund with about 60,000 people, is the top destination for cross-country skiing.  The lab where I work is Sweden’s Winter Sports Research Center.

They like snow here.  They pile it up in huge mountains, then cover it with sawdust.  In the fall, when it’s time for snow, they break it out, and distribute it along the cross-country skill course.

Thursday afternoon, just after we arrived, we went to a restaurant in the tower overlooking the cross-country ski park.  It was 2:30 but there were lots of folks cross-country skiing.  Many of the cars carry skiing boxes on top.  In fact our apartment is about 0.25 mile from the Froson Alpine Ski Slope.

Yesterday we drove about an hour west to the top Alpine skiing area in Sweden, Are (Ore).

You’ll hear about this one, -28C!!
