Monkeying Around

One of the KEY reasons we came to Sub-Saharan Africa was to see wildlife.  We are in a pretty big city, and though they say that animals occasionally roam through here, we haven’t seen much yet.

This AM, in church the pastor told the story of a spitting cobra approaching the door of the sanctuary.  The head of maintenance, AJ, dispatched the cobra handily, but some people had a pretty strong reaction to the story.  I guess that old promise in Genesis about animosity towards serpents is still going strong.

The first morning that Brenda was in Botswana, she looked out our back sliding door and saw a troop of Vervet monkeys on the back wall of our little compound.  The group of five was harassing the neighborhood cats.  Brenda said they really chased one poor kitty around mercilessly.

We have seen a few interesting birds.  I tried to get pictures of a  big dove with a top-knot, but they spooked before I could get a photo.  On the way to work, I sometimes see a small bird like a goldfinch, except instead of bright yellow, they are a vivid blue.

We are less that 8 km from the Gaborone Game reserve, and only 12 km or so from the Mokolodi Game Park.  We hope to go to each of these places soon.  Unfortunately, it has been work, work, and work so far.  We still have a good bit to do, but at least the list has now gotten manageable.

Stay tuned, L^rd willing we will be posting lots of picts soon.
