The Running of the Bulls in...Gaborone

Cows have long been a major part of life in Botswana.  Remote "cattle posts" are the Ranches of Southern Africa.  Beef is common and economical.

On Sunday evening we spent a lovely time with some missionaries at their home on the outskirts of Gaborone.  On our way home, along a 4-lane road, we saw this:

Now for all you mid-Westerners, note that these cattle are NOT inside any fence.  They are merely ambling down the sidewalk at 9PM.  They appeared totally unsupervised, and it was unclear exactly where they were headed.  Twice earlier in the day, we saw herds of cattle roaming free.

We live within sight of UB, and at 7 this AM we heard the sound of cowbells.  Sure enough, between us and the Uni, a couple of guys were driving a pretty big herd of cattle alongside rush-hour traffic.   We have no idea where they were headed, but at least there was a bit of supervision this time.

Scripture is cleat that, "All we like sheep have gone astray."  We are also told that the Good Shepherd will leave the 99 to search out the missing sheep.

"But those are sheep not cows." you say.

True enough, but the reminder is still apt, apt I say.  A herd of cows ought to remind us of the Love and Concern of our Heavenly Father.
